She helped lay the groundwork for four co-ops in the Pittsburgh region–Beltzhoover, Clairton, East End and Homewood. The co-ops provided mothers with temporary relief to address personal needs, such as sleep and medical treatment. Members received codes of conduct agreements, swap schedules, and CPR and first aid certification.
A childminder is somebody who provides childcare for children in the childminder’s own home for more than two hours a day. This means that children will have the freedom and comforts they are used to in their own homes but with the added benefit of a structured routine that has its roots in delivering a core educational curriculum. Childcare.co.uk is an award winning online social networking platform for parents, childcare providers and private tutors with over 3 million members.
And that’s exactly what a babysitting co-op is. A form of organizing ourselves where a little extra effort can go a long way. When looking to employ a nanny, it’s a great idea to interview a few different…

Also, feel free to email me at if you have questions as you start yours or want to talk through the process with someone. The co-ops arose in the middle of a pandemic, so our initial interactions occurred online.
It’s something I’ve been ruminating on a lot related to this project and wrote about in a story published in Romper last week that explores the deeper potential of such babysitting co-ops. Each family is given a certain number of hours to start with (we started with 5 each) and you use those hours as currency. You have an appointment and your partner is working? You just want to sit alone staring at the wall in a coffee shop? That’s why I reached out to my friend Yvette and asked her to share her blueprint for how to start a babysitting cooperative locally. Her son is now in college–her village helped him grow up in a loving, supportive environment and later attend graduate school at one of the nation’s leading universities.
Group Organization and Community-Building
A nanny provides childcare for one or more children in the parent’s own home. I’ve done over 500 sits with Bubble – I love it. I have over 10 years of experience working in schools, children’s centres and with SEN children. Babysitters who work more than eight hours a week need to be taken on as an employee under a contract, resulting in quite high costs. But we get so much both as the one being asked and the one asking that it’s worth the risk. The babysitting co-op model makes asking that much easier.
The best nannies
- Another platform, Babysits, is a babysitting community for parents and babysitters.
- This means that they do not have to register with the National Childcare Office (ONE) or its Flemish equivalent (Kind & Gezin).
- Three months of care turned into six years of payments!
- They scheduled events with the members–there were about six members in each co-op.
Bubble is the best, simpleist and most effective way to get sits. With Bubble, you have complete control over the jobs that you apply for. Both systems rely on the reviews of other parents on the platform.
My favourite feature on the Bubble app is the reviews. You know that they are very honest and that’s something that I rely on. See mutual friends and read other sitters’ reviews of parents. You also don’t need to have read all of this at once to do what we did.

Among the apps, the price varies greatly from one babysitter to another. According to Babysits, the average pay is €7.88 per hour, but this excludes the monthly cost of using the platform (which can be up to €15 per month). One example is Bsit, a Belgian platform for babysitting, which suggests recommended babysitters in your region or neighbourhood. Babysitters have a profile where parents can see availabilities, experience with certain ages and other features. Babysitters usually charge prices in the range of €7 to €10 an hour, but there are cheaper options. They cannot be paid through the service voucher system (titres-services).

Babysitters can also review parents to inform others about their experiences with families. There used to be a French-speaking equivalent to Gezinsbond – La Ligue des familles – but from September this year, it shifted its focus to providing babysitters to parents of children with disabilities. In Belgium, babysitting is allowed from the age of 15. Unlike in France, there is no legal framework for babysitters, and they generally work in a personal capacity. This means that they do not have to register with the National Childcare Office (ONE) or its Flemish equivalent (Kind & Gezin). Thankfully, there are several reliable services which offer this type of childcare, and The Brussels Times has created a guide to show you where to look.
The insurance coverage for this service depends on the company or organisation (see below). Most people do not sign an employment contract with the person looking after their child. Babysitters performing this service who are paid a limited fee and do not work more than eight hours per week with one or more employers are not subject to the National Social Security Office. A babysitting co-op is when a group of families band together to share in babysitting.
